Six Ways to Improve Your Site’s SEO Without Outsourcing

While SEO (search engine optimization) may seem complex and even a bit scary, there are many ways you can improve you site’s rankings without outsourcing it to an expensive firm. In a recent article, Search Engine Land provided six tips for improving any site’s SEO. Here is a summary of their recommendations:

Perform a keyword analysis. There are free and inexpensive resources available online that help you select optimal lists of keyword phrases, like Google’s keyword tool. This tool is part of the Google AdWords suite, but it is just as useful for SEO.

See what your competition is doing. A great free approach to examining your comparison is to use SEO Quake, which is a Firefox plug-in that allows you to instantly view an array of statistics. This plugin will display a Website’s Google page rank, the number of pages they have indexed in each of the major search engines, Alexa rank, the number of inbound links, even the age of their website. You can also plug your competitor’s websites into Compete.com to get a general idea of how much traffic they receive each month.

Develop strong content. Having strong content is the best way to improve your Website’s search engine ranking. Focus on keywords when writing any articles or blogs. Using your target keywords three or four times in the article and hyperlinking them to the appropriate page on your website.

Follow the coding standards. Be sure to follow coding standards and use your markup semantically. Basically, this means only using one ‘H1′ tag per page, and making sure your content is using the appropriate markup for what the content is. What is the relationship between markup and SEO? Spiders use your markup to determine the significance of the keywords it finds; a ‘H1′ tag, for example, means ‘This is the most important content on the page–this is what the page is about!’

Build reliable links to your site. Having links to your practice’s site from reliable sources is one of the most powerful ways to improve your site’s ranking. Is your affiliated hospital(s) linking to you? Think of other HCA practices, clinics and hospitals that can link to your site. Does your practice take part in health fairs, screenings or nonprofit events? If so, have the event’s Website link to yours.
